Calls of interest:
The manager of a large retailer on London Avenue reported being threatened by a shoplifter on the evening of May 29. Police spoke with the manager, who said that he had stopped a man trying to steal from the store, at which point the man raised his fist and threatened the manager, before fleeing. Mission RCMP searched the area and found the suspect walking along the train tracks nearby. He was arrested for robbery, theft, and for an outstanding arrest warrant. Fortunately, store staff were not injured during the incident. Charges are being recommended against the 35-year-old man, whom police have dealt with many, many times.
Break and enters were reported on back-to-back days last week. The first one occurred at Camp Luther on Shook Road during the overnight hours of May 24-25. A large amount of tools were stolen, which are stamped with either “Camp Luther”, or “CL”. A golf cart was also stolen, but was located and recovered nearby. The other break and enter occurred during the daytime hours on May 26, and was to a residence on Cedar Street, north of 7th Avenue. The suspect forced entry through a basement door, and stole a considerable amount of jewelry. If you have information about either of these crimes, or if you see someone selling tools with “Camp Luther” or “CL” stamped on them, call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, files 26-6674 and 26-6753.
Utility wires were recently cut about 1 kilometre up the Florence Lake Forest Service Road, near the Stave Lake boat launch. It appears that the wires were cut with the intention of stealing them, however the thieves did not actually get away with the wire. Regardless, the damage done was considerable. Report any suspicious vehicles or persons working on or around utility wires to your local police.
On the evening of May 28, paramedics notified police of a single-vehicle collision near the intersection of Shook Road and Lougheed Highway. When Mission RCMP arrived, an officer saw a white BMW in the ditch, and a man being assessed by paramedics. The man exhibited symptoms of impairment by liquor, and was required to provide samples of his breath into a roadside screening device. The 26-year-old failed two tests and received a 90-day driving prohibition, and the BMW was impounded for 30 days. Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash.
Mission RCMP responded to two more incidents of out-of-towners shooting illegally up the Lost Creek Forest Service Road last week. The first incident was during the afternoon of May 27, when a passerby reported four people getting ready to start shooting, associated to a black Ford F-150. An officer attended and found four people from Richmond having lunch, with a table setup with four rifles, targets, and ammunition. The officer advised them that no shooting was allowed within 400 metres of any forest service road in the area, and that doing so could result in fines or their firearms being seized. The group packed up and left. Two days later, a similar report was received, involving a group associated to a red Jeep Cherokee and a black Ford Ranger. Officers located the vehicles just as they were driving off the forest service road. The group, from North Vancouver, were also educated on the area being largely closed to shooting.
There were two incidents involving youth riding e-scooters in Mission this past week. One occurred on the evening of May 31, at the intersection of McRae Avenue and Kite Street. Two youth, riding together on one e-scooter, rode across a crosswalk and were struck by a moving vehicle. The driver saw the youth at the last moment and braked, likely reducing the force of the impact. Both youth were transported to hospital with minor injuries. The following evening, a resident reported that a group of youth on e-scooters were riding around very fast in the area of Tunbridge Avenue, one of them almost got hit by a vehicle, and they were banging on doors and causing a disturbance in the neighbourhood. Parents and youth are reminded that it is illegal to ride e-scooters on streets, public parking lots, and sidewalks in Mission.
On the lighter side
On the morning of May 28, police received a call from a resident in the Dewdney area, who said that he found three people inside his residence stealing his belongings, and that two had since fled, but he had one trapped inside his residence. Based on the initial details of the call – a break and enter in progress, with a homeowner actively detaining one suspect and two others trying to get away – multiple officers were dispatched, as was a police dog handler. However, upon arrival, things were not quite as described. The caller told officers that he still had one suspect trapped in his RV trailer, but when police looked inside, there was no one there. He then reiterated that the suspects had been inside and stolen items, but upon closer inspection, there was no indication that anyone had been there, or that anything had been taken. The resident then showed police a box where he said the suspects came out of, and where he believed he still had one trapped inside. The problem? The box was so small, that the suspects would have had to have been the size of a couple of hand puppets in order to have fit inside the tiny space. The man then admitted that he had used a quantity of drugs that day. Officers assured the man that there was no one inside the box, and no way that anyone could have passed through the box. They confirmed he did not need medical attention, and recommended that he not use any further drugs.
