Recently, an officer with Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services unit was monitoring traffic on Cedar Street near a playground zone, when two road users caught his eye.  A 15-year-old male was riding an electric limited-speed motorcycle, followed by a 16-year-old male riding an e-scooter – both of these devices are prohibited on streets and sidewalks in Mission.  Both teens were riding in one of the vehicle traffic lanes, northbound on Cedar Street, and both were travelling above the posted speed limit.  Both also fled after the officer tried to pull them over.

Check out this video for full details, and to see how it ended.

Two teens recently attracted the attention of a Mission RCMP Traffic Services officer.

One was riding an e-scooter, while the other was riding a limited speed motorcycle.

Both devices are illegal to use in Mission, both on the street and on the sidewalk

Additional safety concerns noted:

  • Both were riding in the travel lane, with vehicles around them
  • They were travelling faster than the speed limit
  • Neither rider was wearing a helmet

None of these would have made the riders legal, but are some of the reasons why we conduct this type of enforcement

[Daytime video from inside a police car parked perpendicular to a 4-lane roadway.  A male youth riding a limited speed motorcycle in the slow lane rides past the police car, followed by a male youth riding on an e-scooter. Vehicle traffic can be seen following behind the youth.]

Both riders are fully in the travel lane

[Two still images taken from the same video.  One shows both riders in the travel lane of the roadway, while the other is a close-up of the same image.]

[Video from inside the police car, showing it pulling out onto the roadway and starting to follow the riders.]

[A still image from the same video, showing the e-scooter rider in the middle of the vehicle traffic lane.]

[Video from inside the police car, showing it following the riders for a short distance until both riders turn right onto the first side street.  Other vehicles can be seen on the roadway, and one vehicle directly in front of the police car has its right-turn signal on, but waits for both riders to complete the turn before it turns onto the same side street.]

[A still image from the same video, showing the e-scooter rider approaching the intersection and the car with its turn signal on, waiting before turning right.]

Vehicle is turning right.  Fortunately the driver sees the e-scooter and waits.

Both riders fled from police.  The two riders were identified soon after this incident.  The 15 and 16-year-olds have now received hundreds of dollars of tickets, for offences including speeding in a playground zone, no driver’s license, fail to wear required helmet, and failing to stop for police.

E-scooters are illegal on public roadways and sidewalks in Mission and many municipalities.

Riders can be ticketed.  Parents of riders under 16 can also be ticketed.

Most importantly, they can be dangerous when ridden around other road users.

Please stay safe and follow road-safety laws.
