A sense of remembrance and togetherness filled the air outside the Mission RCMP detachment on September 24, when riders from the 2026 BC Law Enforcement Memorial Ride to Remember stopped in for a short visit.
The annual Ride to Remember is a 3-day memorial ride to help remember fallen peace officers from around the province. Their cycling journey takes them over 400 kilometres in the span of three days, from Vancouver to Chilliwack, Chilliwack to Delta, and around the greater Victoria area. They then attend a service at the Bastion Memorial on the lawn of the BC Legislature on Sunday, where they pay tribute to the 135 peace officers who have lost their lives during active service in the province.
Mission RCMP’s Officer in Charge, Inspector Ray Monsef, welcomed riders to the detachment, and presented a letter of commendation to them, to show the detachment’s appreciation for the riders’ efforts. Before a small crowd of spectators, two of the riders then told the stories of two of the officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
“This was a poignant and moving event,” says Inspector Monsef. “To hear the stories of the fallen officers, and to be reminded of the people behind the names was really touching. The riders embody the phrase, ‘A hero remembered never dies’, and the efforts of the riders and their support crew truly help to keep the memories of the fallen officers alive. We wish the riders strength and safety throughout the rest of their journey. Thank you for helping to keep the memory of all 135 fallen officers alive.”
