Around 1:30 am on September 16, Mission RCMP were called by a couple who were stranded on an island in the Fraser River. The couple had taken a white inflatable dinghy to the island, and anchored it there while they had a fire. When they returned to the boat, it was gone.  Mission RCMP activated Mission Search and Rescue, whose volunteers attended and rescued the couple from the island.  The couple’s boat was not located.  It was a white inflatable, with “Ray 500” written on the side, and a Mercury 9.9 horsepower outboard motor.  If you have seen the boat, please call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, file 26-12292.

Two potentially dangerous situations were accidentally caused by young children on the same day last week.  The first occurred on the morning of September 18, when a seven-year-old boy found a small blow torch in his residence, connected a propane cylinder, and started a small fire inside his residence. Mission Fire and Rescue Service attended and quickly put out the fire.  The second incident occurred that evening, when a four-year-old boy took the keys to his parents’ Cadillac Escalade, entered and started the vehicle, and drove it into two nearby parked cars. CCTV footage confirmed that the boy was in fact the one who started and drove the Cadillac.  Fortunately, there were no reported injuries in either of these matters. These incidents are a good reminder to parents that children can be very resourceful, and can get into a variety of dangerous situations very quickly.  Take a look around your home and consider what you could do in order to reduce the potential risks.

A group of teens were reportedly throwing items around inside a dollar store in Mission on the evening of September 18, and also stole a box of toys.  Mission RCMP located the group nearby, and arrested three of them, all aged 13-14 years old.  They received dates to appear in court, will be required to meet regularly with a youth probation officer, and were released to their guardians.

Shortly before 10 pm on September 17, a witness reported seeing an orange SUV sideways in a ditch along Sylvester Road, with a possibly impaired driver standing next to the vehicle. Police attended and met with the driver, who indeed displayed signs of being impaired by drugs.  He reportedly had been trying to turn around when he backed into a ditch and got stuck.  The man underwent a series of standardized field sobriety tests, which provided further evidence that the man was impaired.  His vehicle was impounded, and he received a 24-hour driving prohibition. He was unable to surrender his driver’s licence card, because it had already been seized by police in Surrey a week earlier, when he received another 24-hour driving prohibition.

Multiple other impaired drivers were taken off the roads this past week – some of whom had also been involved in collisions.  A possible impaired driver was reportedly driving erratically in the area of Farms Road and Stave Lake Road in Hatzic around 10 pm on September 17.  Police located and pulled over the white Dodge pickup, and confirmed the driver was exhibiting signs of impairment.  He failed two roadside screening device tests. The following evening, two witnesses reported that a woman had driven over a curb near Albert McMahon Elementary school, and then parked the vehicle and started taking items out of it in the school parking lot.  Officers attended and confirmed that the 43-year-old woman appeared to be impaired. She also failed two roadside screening device tests.  Then around 1 am on September 20, Mission RCMP were called to Catchpole Avenue, after a vehicle drove into the concrete block at the end of the road, and flipped onto its side.  An officer helped extricate the driver through the trunk of his car, and immediately noticed signs of impairment.  He was arrested for driving while impaired, but refused to comply with a breath demand. He chose not to go to the hospital with paramedics, and because he was grossly intoxicated, he was lodged in a cell to help keep him safe until he sobered up.  All of these drivers received 90-day driving prohibitions and 30-day vehicle impounds.

Around midnight on September 19, a Mission RCMP officer on patrol spotted a large and growing fire near the Horne Street overpass.  He stopped to check it out and confirmed that a homeless camp was on fire.  Mission Fire Rescue Service attended and put out the fire before it spread to a nearby business.  Police confirmed that no one was in the camp at the time of the fire, and believe that it was started by an unattended stove.
