Calls of interest:
On the afternoon of October 14, an officer with Mission RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit pulled over a car on Lougheed Highway near Wren Street, after observing suspicious behaviour. The vehicle was occupied by two males in their early 20s, who were from the Cariboo area. The men couldn’t explain why they were in Mission or where they were headed, and said they didn’t know what was in a large duffel bag in the back. Further investigation revealed that the bag was actually full of both prohibited and restricted firearms. Both men were arrested for related firearms offences, but were later released, pending further investigation. The firearms were seized, as well as other items in the bag that may have been stolen during a break and enter. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who recognizes any of these firearms, or has further information about this matter, should call Mission RCMP, 604-826-7161, file 2026-13571.
Police were called to a fast-food restaurant on 1st Avenue on the afternoon of October 13, after a man was reportedly hitting others outside the business with a metal pipe. Officers arrived on scene three minutes after the call, and arrested the suspect, who was sitting at a table inside the restaurant. No one had been injured, and the persons who had been struck were not interested in any assault charges. The 26-year-old was held in a jail cell to sober. The motivation for the assault is unknown.
Mission RCMP were called to a BC Transit bus on October 13 around 6:20 pm, after an altercation occurred on board the bus. Another passenger had notified the driver that a group of teens were vaping on the bus. When the driver told them to stop, the teens allegedly started trying to spit on the driver. Fortunately, the plastic shield around the driver prevented the spit from getting on him, and the teens ran off the bus. Less than an hour later, a similar report was received from a different bus driver, with at least one of the suspect descriptions matching that of one of the suspects from the first bus. Mission RCMP are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from the buses, and anticipate recommending charges against the youth.
Members of Mission RCMP’s Community Safety and Enforcement Team (CSET) regularly conduct patrols of the downtown area, with the aim of addressing any issues impacting business owners or the general public. On October 15, one of the CSET members on patrol was notified by City of Mission Bylaws Officers that a man in the area of 1st Avenue and Horne Street appeared to be intoxicated and was causing a disturbance. The CSET officer attended and spoke with a large, shirtless man, who was yelling at people and kicking around a garbage can. The man was clearly intoxicated, and initially challenged police to fight, but was arrested without further incident and was held in cells to sober. Half an hour later, another CSET member on patrol spotted a man sitting at a bench on 1st Avenue near Welton Street smoking drugs from a glass pipe. He was also arrested, although he was subsequently released, as no other drugs were found in his possession.
An electric-vehicle charging station in Mission was targeted by a thief last week – although the apparently bungling burglar only caused significant damage to the equipment, and did not actually get away with any materials. Then a few days later, on the night of October 15-16, a pickup truck on Barker Court had its gas tank drilled, and fuel stolen from it. Anyone with information about either of these thefts – or anyone else who has had electrical components vandalized or fuel stolen – should call Mission RCMP. Files 2026-13603 and 13645.
Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services Unit was out in force this past weekend, taking 8 impaired drivers off the roads, and issuing numerous violation tickets. Their enforcement included stopping a 43-year-old female for driving while impaired on Dewdney Trunk Road shortly before 1 am on October 18, stopping a 63-year-old male for driving while impaired on Lougheed Highway at River Road in Dewdney around 10 pm on October 17, and impounding a GMC Sierra pickup that was travelling at over 130 km/hr on the Mission Bridge on the evening of October 16.
