Two bodies discovered up isolated Forest Service Road, deaths not believed to be criminal

Police believe the deaths of two individuals whose bodies were discovered in a remote area near Nakusp are not criminal in nature. The RCMP is now working in support of the BC Coroners Service, which has conduct of the investigation.

On June 16, 2026, at 9:17 a.m., the Nakusp RCMP received a report of a burned vehicle and a body on the Tate Creek Forest Service Road. Police attended to discover that the vehicle had become stuck in very difficult terrain and appeared to subsequently catch fire. A deceased, unidentified man was located nearby. He appeared to have suffered burn injuries prior to his death.

The body of an unidentified woman was also located in the area. No obvious injuries were observed at the time of discovery.

While the investigation remains in the early stages and no conclusion have been made, evidence at the scene suggests that criminality is not a factor in either death. 

“The area is remote, with no cellular service and extremely limited traffic,” said Corporal Paul Britton of the Nakusp RCMP. “While the two deceased have been tentatively identified, we continue to work closely with the BC Coroners Service to confirm their identities and to advance the investigation.”
