Nanaimo RCMP are highlighting the important role community members play in public safety following an incident where timely reporting helped police safely resolve a potentially concerning situation involving a replica firearm.
Just before 9 AM, on March 19, 2026, a Canada Post employee was working their regular delivery route in the Vanderneuk area when they observed a youth, believed to be approximately 10 years old, carrying an item concealed inside a black garbage bag. Trusting their instincts and maintaining a safe distance, the worker continued to observe as the youth placed the bag in bushes under a tree and then continued walking along Lost Lake Road.
Recognizing that the behavior was out of the ordinary and could pose a public safety concern, the Canada Post employee contacted police.
Nanaimo RCMP attended and located the item, which was determined to be a BB‑style rifle, concealed in a black garbage bag. Officers later located the youth involved a short distance away. Through further investigation and discussions with the youth and parents involved, police determined the incident stemmed from poor judgment and curiosity among children, with no criminal intent identified.
The replica firearm was voluntarily surrendered by the lawful owner and will be destroyed. Parents and youth were counselled on firearm safety, the seriousness of replica firearms in public spaces, and the importance of making safe choices.
“We would like to thank the Canada Post employee for their diligence and willingness to report this activity. Postal workers and delivery drivers are often the eyes and ears of the community, and this incident is a strong example of how paying attention and quickly reporting suspicious behavior can prevent situations from escalating.” Said Inspector Donovan Tait, Operations Officer for the Nanaimo RCMP.
