For parents, caregivers and motorists

• When a school bus has its red lights flashing or stop sign extended, drivers in both directions must come to a complete stop.
• Follow the rules and traffic flow established for your school's designated drop-off and pick-up zones.
• If parking near a school, be mindful of residents and avoid blocking driveways.
• Expect increased traffic around schools, particularly during the first week of September, and allow extra travel time.

School and Playground Speed Zones

• School zones are in effect at 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on designated school days.
• Playground zones posted at 30 km/h are enforced from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

• Cross only at designated crosswalks and intersections.
• Dismount and walk your bicycle or scooter when crossing at an intersection.
• Before crossing, look both ways and make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.

E-Scooter Safety

• Riders must be at least 16 years of age and E-bike riders 14 years of age
• A certified helmet must be worn at all times.
• E-scooters are permitted only on public roadways and designated bicycle lanes where allowed.

"The start of a new school year brings increased traffic and more children walking, cycling, and using scooters to get to and from school," said Inspector Donovan Tait, Operations Officer, Nanaimo RCMP. "Every driver, cyclist and pedestrian has a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Slow down, stay alert, and be especially mindful in school and playground zones. A few extra seconds of caution can help prevent a tragedy and ensure every child arrives safely at school and back home."

In doing our part to keep our children and roads safe, Nanaimo RCMP frontline officers, Traffic Services members, and Speed Watch volunteers will be conducting enforcement and education initiatives in and around school zones to promote safe driving behaviours and enhance student safety.
