On May 8, 2026 at approximately 10 pm Atlin RCMP received report from the Haines Junction RCMP of a missing snowmobiler in Haines Pass who failed to meet up with his party.
A Whitehorse resident reported that her brother and two friends had gone snowmobiling near Haines Summit.
The three snowmobilers set out to retrieve a broken down snowmachine from the area in northwestern BC, along the Yukon border.
At approximately 4 pm, one of the snowmobilers became separated from the group. The two other individuals returned to the parking area and waited for him to come out.
The conditions at this were extreme snow and wind which created zero visibility.
The missing snowmobiler did not have in-reach or satellite phone and it was unknown if his Apple satellite messaging was working. He also did not have any survival gear with him.
Yukon RCMP search and rescue resources have been staging in the area since daybreak on Saturday morning. The conditions are extreme and attempt to access the area by snowmobile was attempted but not possible. Searches by helicopter have been attempted during short windows of visibility, however the conditions are extremely challenging with snow, fog, rain and wind creating no visibility. The terrain is very technical with extreme avalanche conditions, open crevices and melting snow.
Haines Junction RCMP are assisting Atlin RCMP Detachment with the search and rescue effort.
RCMP are aware of well intended people who are planning to search the area on their own. This is extremely dangerous, and well intended actions could very well result in RCMP diverting resources to search for additional people who are either lost, stranded or struck by avalanche.
RCMP officers are at various points on the Haines Highway, please speak to them before entering the area.
