BC RCMP notifies IIO BC of incident in North Vancouver

The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in North Vancouver where a man has died.
On July 21, 2026, at approximately 1:12 p.m., North Vancouver RCMP responded to reports of a man armed with an edged weapon threatening members of the public inside a business at Westview Plaza, located in the 2600-block of Westview Drive. The suspect subsequently exited the business, entered a vehicle in the parking lot, and collided with multiple parked vehicles.
The suspect exited the vehicle at the gas station in the same plaza. Multiple police resources responded and interacted with the suspect at the location. The suspect entered the driver’s seat of an unoccupied police vehicle and during the ensuing interaction with responding officers, a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed, and shots were fired by police.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later died. No physical injuries were sustained by responding officers.
The IIO BC has been notified and is attending the scene to investigate police actions in relation to this incident. The surrounding area has been cordoned off to support the investigation.
As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
