North Cowichan RCMP are investigating a suspicious vehicle fire that occurred in the early morning hours of June 6, 2026.
On June 6, 2026 at approximately 2:07 a.m., police responded to assist the North Cowichan Fire Department at the Thunderbird Motor Inn located at 5849 York Road in Duncan. Upon attendance, two vehicles were found fully involved in fire, with flames impacting the nearby structure.
Due to the proximity of the fire to occupied units, the incident was deemed an imminent risk to life.
Investigators have determined the fire is suspicious in nature, and the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Services has been engaged to assist with the investigation.
“This was a serious incident that posed a significant risk to people staying nearby,” said Cst. Tessa McDonald, North Cowichan RCMP Media Relations Officer. “We are actively working to determine what occurred and are asking anyone with information to come forward.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and efforts are underway to identify those responsible.
