On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Northern Rockies RCMP were advised of a single vehicle crash on Highway 97 near Steamboat Hill.
A north bound semi-truck, hauling a flammable material, failed to stop at a mandatory brake check in the area. Witness then reported seeing a “fireball” in the distance and heard sounds of explosions. As a result, the highway was completely blocked.
Attending first responders could not access the scene until the Fire Department safely secure the scene. Once the scene was safely secured it was confirmed that the driver was deceased.
BC Coroners Services, Fire Services, Environment Canada and Transport Canada are engaged. The investigation continues and causal factors are to be determined. Federal Public Works is engaged and working with their contractor in efforts to re-open the highway. No further details are available. More information may be released as it becomes available.
