Suspicious fire causes death

In the early morning hours of August 1, 2025, Port Alberni RCMP responded to a report of a fire in the 2000 block of 16th Avenue in Port Alberni.
On arrival responding police members observed a home fully engulfed in flames. Port Alberni fire fighters were on scene putting out the fire and performing life saving measures on an adult male resident. An adult female resident was located suffering from fire and smoke related injuries.
The victims were transported to hospitals outside the community. The male later died from his injuries, and the female remains in hospital in stable but serious condition.
RCMP Forensic identification Services (FIS) conducted an examination of the scene with investigators from the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
Port Alberni RCMP are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this fire and are asking the public for any security or dash cam footage in the 16th Avenue and Neil Street neighbourhood between 10:30pm August 1, 2025, and 01:30am on August 2, 2025.
