The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) is investigating a homicide that occurred at a residence in a local trailer park.
On March 13, 2026, shortly after 9:00 p.m., Port Alberni RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting that a male had allegedly been shot. Upon arrival, officers located three adult males, including the victim, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. First responders attempted life‑saving measures; however, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
VIIMCU has assumed conduct of the investigation and is working closely with Port Alberni RCMP.
81-year-old Herbert Crowley of Port Alberni has been charged with second degree murder and attempted murder. Crowley remains in custody pending future court appearances.
The investigation has determined this to be an isolated incident involving parties known to each other.
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sgt. Jason Kerr with VIIMCU. “Investigators have worked tirelessly to advance this investigation and bring charges forward. As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.”
