Port Alberni man sentenced to 22 years for sexual offences

On August 11, 2026, Shaun Pater was sentenced to 22 years in custody after being convicted of sexual offences, including one count of sexual interference involving a person under the age of 14, two counts of sexual interference involving persons under the age of 16, and one count of sexual assault.

"The care, sensitivity, and professionalism demonstrated by Port Alberni RCMP investigators throughout these complex proceedings are truly commendable," said Inspector Kim Bruce, Officer in Charge of the Port Alberni RCMP Detachment. "These historical offences spanned several years and required an exceptional degree of dedication and investigative skill to bring these matters before the courts, to obtain justice and hopefully, to gain some measure of closure, for those individuals directly impacted by the offender."

The RCMP recognizes the courage of victims and witnesses who participated in the criminal justice process and acknowledges the efforts of all investigators and justice system partners involved in this matter.

A court-ordered publication ban remains in effect. No information that could identify protected individuals may be published, broadcast, or transmitted. Publication bans under section 486.4 of the Criminal Code prohibit the disclosure of information that could identify protected victims or witnesses.
