During the annual Salmon Days fishing derby, officers from the Port McNeill RCMP, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) joined forces to conduct a coordinated marine enforcement operation in the waters surrounding Port McNeill and Malcolm Island.
The joint operation utilized both DFO and RCMP vessels, allowing officers to conduct patrols throughout the area and engage directly with boaters participating in the busy fishing weekend. Throughout the operation, officers stopped and checked numerous vessels to ensure compliance with applicable fishing regulations, boating safety requirements, and other federal and provincial legislation. Officers also took the opportunity to speak with boaters about responsible fishing practices and safety while operating on the water.
Multiple violations were identified during the patrols, resulting in officers issuing a number of violation tickets and enforcement actions. The operation provided an opportunity for the three agencies to combine their respective resources, authorities, and expertise while maintaining a visible enforcement presence during one of the area's popular fishing events. Joint initiatives such as this help promote safe boating, responsible fishing, and the protection of British Columbia's natural resources, while strengthening cooperation between enforcement agencies serving North Vancouver Island.
The RCMP, DFO, and BCCOS would like to thank the many boaters who were found to be operating safely and responsibly, and who took the time to speak with officers during the patrols.
