The Prince George RCMP has some tips to help prevent or deter property crime for rural property owners.
Cameras
- Install warning signs of 24 hr video surveillance.
- Consider installing trail cameras in areas to capture quality images of vehicles and license plates.
- Install a camera if your property has rear trail access from quads.
- Consider installing remote viewing security cameras, viewable on your cell phone.
Outside
- Install a good quality, visible florescent property address sign that can easily be seen during the day and night.
- Consider installing a gate across your property driveway, near the entrance to your property.
- Have a proper locking mechanism on the gate, one that cannot easily be cut or broken off, like a puck lock.
- Have good LED motion sensor lighting elevated at least 10’ to prevent tampering.
- Keep shrubs and all landscape material pruned to ensure you are not creating any hiding places.
- Clear-trunk trees up to 6 feet to maintain natural surveillance.
- Keep your property looking tidy and looked after.
- Install trailer hitch locks on any trailers in your yard and shop.
- Take keys and possibly batteries out of quads, equipment, and vehicles.
- Don’t leave tools, axes, shovels, or ladders within easy access to doors and windows.
Inside
- Don’t leave spare keys visible for easy access in your home.
- If you have a safe, in particular a gun safe, have it firmly secured to the wall and floor.
- Record serial numbers of all electronics, tools, equipment, and valuables
- Take photos of coin and jewellery collections to make it easier to track if found
- Keep a list of all important contacts, credit cards, passports, driver’s license, etc. in a secure place
- Don’t leave garage door openers on your vehicle’s visor.
- Have your computer password protected.
Seasonal
- If away from home for an extended period have someone check your home and property or secure a trusted house-sitter to stay at your home.
- If possible leave a vehicle in your driveway when away for an extended period.
- Don’t advertise on social media that you will be away from your property
- Pin garage doors during an extended absence.
- Use social media to connect with neighbours to report suspicious circumstances.
- Don’t let papers and mail pile up in your mail box.
- Turn water off when you leave for an extended period.
- Put your lights and TV on a timer.
- Leave luggage tags on the inside of your suitcase.
