Richmond RCMP reminds motorists to slow down in construction zones

Members of the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) have been conducting enforcement in the construction zone at Westminster Highway and No. 2 Road to ensure drivers are complying with posted speed limits and turning restrictions.

The ongoing nightly construction project includes complex lane closures and turning restrictions to accommodate major infrastructure work. Construction crews have been working on-site and directing heavy traffic through the area.

While most motorists complied with the traffic controls, some drivers were observed speeding and ignoring posted signs. These actions created dangerous conditions for workers, motorists, and other road users. 

During enforcement, RSU officers issued several violation tickets for speeding, using an electronic device while driving, and disobeying traffic signs.

“Construction zones present unique hazards, particularly at night when visibility can be reduced and traffic patterns are altered,” said Corporal Niels Hermes of the Richmond RCMP RSU. “Drivers who ignore speed limits and traffic restrictions place construction workers, fellow motorists, and themselves at unnecessary risk.”

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area when possible and plan alternate routes. If travelling through the construction zone, motorists are reminded to slow down, pay attention to signage, and follow all traffic directions.

Richmond RCMP will continue enforcement efforts to help keep workers and motorists safe.
