Helping Everyone Share the Road Safely

Electric kick scooters (e-scooters) and e-bikes are becoming a more common mode of transportation in Richmond. As their popularity grows, it is important that riders understand the rules of the road and the responsibilities that come with operating these new micromobility vehicles.

The purpose of these outreach events is to help riders learn the rules, improve their safety knowledge, and encourage respectful road-sharing between all road users.

"Road safety is a shared responsibility," says Corporal. Frank Bryson of the Richmond RCMP. "Whether travelling by e-scooter, e-bike, bicycle, vehicle, or on foot, awareness, respect, and predictable behaviour help prevent collisions and reduce serious injuries. These events provide an opportunity for residents to learn the rules, ask questions, and help make Richmond's roads safer for everyone."

Safety Tips for Riders

To help reduce the risk of collisions and injuries, riders should:

  • Know the rules and regulations before you ride
  • Wear a helmet every ride.
  • Stay alert and watch for vehicles and other road/pathway users, as well as hazards.
  • Follow posted speed limits and slow down in busy areas.
  • Use a bell or horn when passing others.
  • Never ride distracted or impaired.
  • If you are new to riding, practice in a safe area before riding near traffic.

Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Stay alert, especially at intersections, and be ready to yield the right-of-way.
  • Watch for other road users and make eye contact if you can, so they can anticipate your next move.
  • Shoulder check for cyclists and e-scooter riders before turning right and watch for all oncoming traffic before turning left. Scan for others before you enter the roadway from an alley or get in and out of a parking spot.
  • Both drivers and passengers must shoulder check for cyclists and e-scooter riders before opening their vehicle door.
  • Maintain at least three seconds of following distance behind cyclists and e-scooter riders and at least one metre when passing.

Members of the public are encouraged to stop by these events, speak with Richmond RCMP officers and our partners, pick up educational materials, and learn more about operating e-scooters and e-bikes safely and responsibly.
