Richmond RCMP is reminding residents to remain vigilant and take simple steps to help protect themselves, their families, and their property following reports of suspicious individuals in residential neighbourhoods.
Suspicious activity can include unknown persons loitering around homes, checking door handles, approaching properties without a legitimate reason, or attempting to gather information about residents and their schedules.
Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions:
- Always lock doors and windows, even when at home.
- Secure sliding doors, balconies, and other potential points of entry.
- Keep exterior areas well lit whenever possible.
- Keep valuables out of sight and consider using security cameras.
- Be aware of unfamiliar persons or vehicles in your neighbourhood.
- Report suspicious activity, behaviour, persons, or vehicles to police promptly.
Residents living in apartment buildings are also reminded not to allow unknown individuals to follow them into secured buildings, to ensure common access doors close properly behind them, and to prevent vehicles from piggybacking into secured parkades by waiting for the gate to fully close behind them whenever possible.
"Community safety is a shared responsibility," said Cpl. Melissa Lui of the Richmond RCMP. "Simple preventative measures, combined with residents remaining aware of their surroundings, can help deter criminal activity and keep neighbourhoods safe."
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity or believes a crime is in progress should call 9-1-1 immediately. Non-emergency incidents can be reported to the Richmond RCMP non-emergency line at 604-278-1212.
Richmond RCMP thanks the public for their continued cooperation and commitment to community safety.
