The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident in Salmo in which a man sustained serious injuries.

On September 3, 2026, at approximately 10:11 a.m., officers from the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) attended a property on Ski Hill Road in support of the Creston RCMP to execute a search warrant.

Officers encountered a man on the property who fled into a travel trailer after being advised he was under arrest.

Over the course of the morning, multiple deescalation measures were employed in an effort to have the individual exit; however, those efforts were unsuccessful. At one point, an officer observed the man at the entrance of the trailer appearing to hold a weapon. As a result, the officer discharged their firearm.

The man retreated back into the trailer before eventually exiting and being taken into custody without further incident nearly an hour later.

Upon exiting, the man received immediate medical care from officers before being transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. No one else sustained any physical injuries.

The IIO BC has been notified and has assumed conduct of the investigation into police actions related to this incident. The surrounding area has been secured to support the investigation.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of an independent investigation by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, visit its website at www.iiobc.ca.
