Salmon Arm RCMP are advising the public that rumours circulating on social media regarding a student threatening to bring a firearm to a local high school are unsubstantiated.

On May 4, 2026, Police became aware of social media posts made by an individual alleging a threat involving a student bringing a gun to the school on Tuesday, May 6. Salmon Arm RCMP immediately investigated the matter and worked closely with School District 83 to assess the situation. Police determined that no such threats were made.

“The reports were based on social media posts that someone decided to interpret as a possible threat,” said Cpl. Brett Urano of the BC RCMP. “There was never any threat to the school, and at no time were students or staff in danger.”

The incident stemmed from a video showing a teenager discharging an airsoft pistol, which was reported to police and assessed. The item involved was confirmed to be an airsoft pistol and not a firearm. Additionally, the video never had any threats made in the incident.

Salmon Arm RCMP continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. If you or anyone else have information regarding this incident please contact police.
