Back to School Safety Reminder

As students return to the classroom this fall, the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP is reminding motorists to exercise caution, reduce speed, and obey all school zone signage to ensure the safety of children travelling to and from school.

The start of the school year results in a significant increase in pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle traffic in the vicinity of schools. Because children can be unpredictable and may enter roadways unexpectedly, it is critical that drivers remain attentive.

The Sidney/North Saanich RCMP is asking drivers to:

• Obey all posted school zone speed limits.
• Remain vigilant for children crossing streets and intersections.
• Follow all school bus safety regulations.
• Avoid distracted driving, including the use of mobile devices.
• Allow extra travel time during peak school hours.

Parents and guardians are also encouraged to review safe walking, cycling, and crossing practices with their children before the school year begins.

To promote road safety and encourage compliance with traffic laws, the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP will be conducting traffic enforcement and education initiatives throughout the back-to-school period.
