As families prepare for Halloween, Smithers RCMP are reminding residents to keep safety top of mind—whether choosing costumes, driving at night or heading out trick-or-treating.
“Halloween is an exciting night, but also one where we see more children and families out after dark,” said Sgt. Ryan Law, Acting Detachment Commander of the Smithers RCMP. “Taking a few simple steps can help ensure a fun and safe evening for everyone,” added Sgt. Law.
Trick-or-treating
- Bring a flashlight and walk instead of run.
- Do not cut across lawns or take short-cuts.
- Only visit homes that are well-lit, and never go inside a house or get into a vehicle.
- Walk in groups and stay together.
- Have a parent approve your Halloween candy before eating it.
Road safety
- Slow down in residential areas and watch for children who may run into the street.
- Avoid distracted driving—phones down and eyes on the road.
- Be patient and prepared to stop as trick-or-treaters cross the road.
- If you are attending adult celebrations, plan ahead for a safe ride home.
For everyone
If you see something, say something. Halloween can also be a time where criminals take advantage of busy neighbourhoods. Keep your eyes open for suspicious or criminal activity, including vandalism, and property damage. Report what you see to Smithers detachment. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
“By planning ahead, staying alert, and looking out for one another, we can make sure Halloween is a safe for our community” added Constable Jocelyn Foidart, Media Relations Officer, Smithers RCMP.
