Traffic complaints are among Smithers RCMP’s top calls for service. People often ask how the detachment works with BC Highway Patrol (BCHP). A September 10th investigation shows how the two teams can work together.

Traffic investigation leads to charges: RCMP file 2026-3365

On September 10, 2026, BCHP located a vehicle with an inactive licence plate in Smithers. Smithers RCMP members were in the area and assisted with the investigation. What might appear to be a straightforward traffic matter became more involved as officers from both teams worked to identify the man alleged to have been driving the vehicle. Police determined he was prohibited from driving therefore he was arrested, and officers found ammunition in his possession.

The man was held for a bail hearing and was later released. Charges have been approved against Morgan Redlack for:

  • Driving while suspended, contrary to section 234(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act
  • Driving while prohibited, contrary to section 95(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act
  • Driving while prohibited, contrary to section 102(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act
  • Two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code

The matter is before the court.

On the road and beyond

BCHP focuses on driving behaviours that contribute to serious injuries and deaths on B.C. roads. BCHP officers have also helped with the high volume of traffic complaints Smithers RCMP receives in town. When they take a traffic call, local members can respond to other calls for service.

The teams also assist each other with investigations. When needed, establishing who was driving can involve reviewing CCTV footage and obtaining witness statements. Smithers RCMP members have worked alongside BCHP on Counterattack road checks, other road safety initiatives and drug trafficking investigations.
