One youth has been charged following concerning online chat between an American youth and a Canadian youth.

On July 19, 2025, the Homeland Security Unit of Louisville Metro Police Department was made aware of alleged school shooting threats made by a 15-year-old youth in their area over the gaming platform Discord. Through their investigation, it was determined that this youth was in regular communication from someone from Canada. It was later determined the Canadian youth was living in the Sooke, BC area.

The youth is a student at Edward Milne Community School.

On March 13, 2026, the Vancouver Island RCMP General Investigation Section was contacted and made aware of the information and initiated a criminal investigation into this matter.

The BC Prosecution Service approved a charge of conveying threats and a warrant for the youth’s arrest was issued.

On March 28, 2026, police arrested the youth without incident, and a search warrant was executed at their residence in Sooke, BC, where electronic devices were seized. The investigation is ongoing.

The youth remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. The court has ordered publication bans under the Criminal Code and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“The RCMP is committed to work with international partners with the common goal of safeguarding public safety and to keep those individuals who pray upon instilling fear within their communities accountable” said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP.
