Squamish RCMP investigates suspicious fires near Highway 99 in Squamish

The Sea to Sky RCMP is investigating three suspicious fires that occurred on the west side of Highway 99, between Whistler and Squamish, in the early morning hours of August 22, 2026. 

Shortly after midnight, the Sea to Sky RCMP (Squamish Detachment) received multiple reports of a fast-spreading fire in the area.  After arriving on scene and speaking with witnesses, police were able to obtain information regarding a man who may have been involved in the incident.  Police subsequently located and arrested a 29-year old male for arson.

RCMP investigators worked alongside the BC Conservation Officer Service, Natural Resource Officers, and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS). BCWS Provincial Wildfire Origin and Cause Investigators have confirmed that there were three separate fires along the north end of the Sea to Sky trail as it approaches Highway 99 near the Cheakamus Canyon. All three fires have been declared out by BCWS.

"The safety of our community and the protection of our natural landscapes are of paramount importance. We want to thank our partners for their hard work in getting these fires under control quickly, and their support with the response and investigation. With the province facing such a precarious fire season, these types of incidents are incredibly concerning. Our investigators are working diligently to ensure those responsible are held accountable," said Sergeant Jeff Shore, Sea to Sky RCMP Investigative Services.

Squamish RCMP is asking anyone who may have been in the area at that time, has dashcam footage or photographs, knows any information or saw anything of relevance, to contact the Squamish RCMP Detachment at 604-892-6100.
