West Kelowna RCMP Traffic Services has issued violations after identifying a driver captured on video allegedly failing to stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights.
Police became aware of an incident after a video circulated online apparently showing a vehicle passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop sign extended. Following a thorough review of the footage, the investigator was able to identify the vehicle involved and attended the registered owner’s residence in West Kelowna.
As a result of the investigation, violation tickets totaling more than $725 were issued to the suspected driver.
“We were able to identify the suspect driver in the incident and issued violations for failing to stop for a school bus and driving without due care and attention,” said Constable Gordon Carson of West Kelowna Traffic Services. “We want to remind all motorists that stopping for a school bus displaying flashing red lights is mandatory and critical for the safety of children.”
Failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is a serious offence due to the significant risk it poses to children and carries a fine of $368. Drivers are required to stop in both directions unless there is a physical median dividing the roadway.
