In February 2026 West Shore RCMP published a media release asking the public to be ware of a scam involving individuals approaching people in parking lots outside busy retail stores in the West Shore area.

Suspects approached members of the public with a similar story, claiming they have run out of money for gas and/or food. The individuals then offer what they claim is gold jewelry at a very low price in exchange for cash. Read the original media release here: Fake jewelry, real losses; gold jewelry scams reported in West Shore parking lots

On March 7, 2026, after an extensive investigation conducted by West Shore RCMP Crime Reduction Unit, two people were arrested in relation to the gold jewelry fraud. The suspects are identified as a 45-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, both residents of Ontario. The pair are currently being detained for an unrelated investigation, while the West Shore RCMP fraud investigation remains ongoing.

Though these two suspects have been identified by police, investigators believe there are more than two suspects committing this type of gold jewelry fraud in the West Shore and are asking citizens to be ware and report suspicious activity to your local police right away.
