Retired Police Dog Halla Remembered for a Lifetime of Service

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired Police Dog Halla. Following a sudden illness, Halla passed away in July 2026.

Halla was 10 years old and dedicated seven years of her life to serving communities in Kamloops and later the West Shore, responding to hundreds of 9-1-1 calls alongside her handler, Cpl. Dave Lewis.

Throughout her distinguished career, Halla was trained in tracking, evidence searches, explosives detection, and worked alongside the RCMP Emergency Response Team. She was especially skilled at locating missing persons.

One call that exemplified Halla’s remarkable abilities involved a missing toddler who had wandered away from the family vehicle during a roadside stop. Halla and her handler, Cpl. Dave Lewis, immediately began tracking through dense forest, locating the child and safely reuniting them with their family. Their quick actions helped bring a frightening situation to a safe and happy ending.

After years of dedicated frontline service, Halla and Cpl. Lewis transitioned to the RCMP National Reintegration Program in 2023. Together, they assisted RCMP employees returning to work after experiencing traumatic incidents, providing support to those navigating their recovery.

Halla was a beautiful German Shepherd who will be remembered for her courage, unwavering dedication, and her remarkable ability to brighten every room she entered. Whether serving on the frontline or supporting the well-being of others, she left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Like many retired police service dogs, Halla required ongoing medical care after her operational career ended. That care was made possible through the generosity of Ned’s Wish, a registered Canadian charity dedicated to supporting retired law enforcement and Canadian Armed Forces K-9s by providing financial assistance and educational resources to enhance their quality of life.
