RCMP seek assistance in identifying suspect in bear spray incident

West Shore RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a youth suspect in an assault with a weapon investigation following a bear spray incident at a Langford shopping centre.

On August 11, 2026, at approximately 4:13 p.m., West Shore RCMP officers attended West Shore Town Centre, located at 2945 Jacklin Rd. in Langford, after receiving a report that a youth had allegedly deployed a can of bear spray into the entrance area near FreshCo grocery store. At least two bystanders were exposed to the spray.

Police have not yet been able to identify the suspect, who is described as:

• A Caucasian male youth, approximately 14 to 17 years old
• Brown hair
• Riding a blue scooter
• Wearing a camouflage-patterned hoodie
• Wearing light-coloured ripped jeans

“Bear spray is designed as a wildlife deterrent for situations where a person encounters a bear and needs to protect themselves. It is not intended to be deployed at people or discharged in a public place. Using bear spray in this manner can put innocent members of the public at risk and the accused can face serious criminal consequences,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.  

Anyone with information about the identity of the suspect is asked to contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264. 

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers online or by calling 1-800-222-8477. 

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant information to come forward.
