Winter.  The magical season when your car’s check engine light comes on and it feels like a personal attack, the roads get icy and it seems like your tires are auditioning for an ice dancing competition, and gentle braking and acceleration aren’t just polite gestures to your passengers; they’re the difference between arriving fashionably late or making a phone call to your insurance provider.

The first snowflake of the season has hit the ground in Whistler.  The Sea to Sky Whistler RCMP is taking this little hint from mother nature and will be commencing with winter driving and tire checks for the season.

“The Sea to Sky corridor can be difficult to navigate during the winter season,” said Corporal Katrina Boehmer, Media Relations Officer with the Sea to Sky RCMP.  "We see a variation of weather and road conditions, from hydroplaning due to excessive water from the rain down at lower elevations, to large dumps of snow and residual ice at higher elevations.  We want travelers within the Sea to Sky corridor to be prepared, no matter what the weather or the road condition and to arrive at their destination safely.”

Although winter tires are not mandatory on all roads in BC, BC Transportation has designated them as required on certain roads and highways.  Highway 99, between Horseshoe Bay and through Whistler into Pemberton, is a highway designated as a winter tire and chain route.

Whistler RCMP is encouraging anyone who is travelling the Sea to Sky corridor during the coming winter months to be prepared for challenging road conditions, for their own safety and for the safety of other travelers.  For more information on winter road travel, Whistler RCMP encourages individuals to visit the following websites:
