Please note that the RCMP is unable to provide pension estimates related to transfer of pension from your current police service/agency. Types of police officer jobs

Vacation

Your years of prior police service will be recognized for vacation entitlements upon proof of employment.

Rank

If you are successful as an experienced police officer, you will be hired at the rank of Constable. Once you have completed a career total of seven years of policing experience, with a minimum of two years RCMP experience, you are entitled to apply for promotional opportunities.

How to join

In order to apply for a job as an experienced police officer of the RCMP, you must first meet the following basic and essential requirements:

  • Have a minimum of two years full-time Canadian police service employment or equivalent (equivalent is defined as any police service employment, full-time or part-time, that amounts to a total of 2 years' full-time police service employment)
  • Have graduated from a police training program at a recognized Canadian police training institution (Canadian Armed Forces Military Police must have successfully completed the basic police training — Qualification Level 3 — after January 1, 2001)
  • Meet the minimum level for the 9 required general duty competencies according to the RCMP Competency Dictionary
  • Must be actively serving or not currently serving but was active in a police role within the last three years
  • Meet the language profile of the position in which you will occupy

You must also meet all qualifications and requirements of a Regular Member applicant.

Note: Canadian Forces Military Police who successfully completed the Military Police Training Program (QL3) after January 1, 2001, are eligible to apply as experienced police officers.

Police experience

  • Request a copy of the RCMP Police Competency definitions and form from your provincial recruiting office. You are required to use these definitions to provide your examples.
  • Using the competency definitions received from your local recruiting office; provide 2 different examples for each of the following police competencies being assessed using the STAR format and keep your text to a total of 9 pages or less.

The STAR format

What is the STAR format

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. The STAR format is used by the RCMP to capture behavioural examples of relevant performance to assess competencies. Please ensure to use this format to provide a complete description of the circumstances, the actions taken, and the results of your actions to describe your functional police experience.

Situation

Example

The following example demonstrates the STAR format we are seeking as you prepare the 2 required examples for each competency relating to your Functional Police Experience.

Competency
Experience and ability to conduct investigations.
Situation
Over the past three years I was the supervisor of a general investigations unit. During the months of July and August of last year, there was a rash of business break and enters occurring throughout the city. Initial investigations by responding officers to these break and enters yielded little evidence to focus on potential suspects. However, I noticed that there were similarities in most of these break and enters, with matching modus operandi (MO's).
Task
It was my job to co-ordinate and investigate the break and enters in an effort to locate the suspects and follow up accordingly.
Action
I gathered information on all break and enters occurring in the city with similar MO's. I then contacted some human sources to find out if they had any information pertaining to the rash of break and enters. I liaised with the Media Relations Officer, who prepared a media release soliciting public assistance for any information pertaining to these break and enters. I also met with the Property Crime Unit and gathered intelligence on possible suspects. I was able to identify two main suspects, both working independently with other accomplices. I then implemented an action plan to deal with these suspects. I requested the assistance of our undercover investigators to confirm the location of one suspect. I conducted a meeting on September 10 consisting of police officers from all the different investigative units. I chaired this meeting and presented an operational plan which I had developed for discussion.
Results
Within a couple of days the first suspect was arrested and taken before the courts for numerous break and enter offences. On September 15, the operational plan on the second suspect was implemented. On September 28, I arrested the second suspect and he eventually pled guilty to numerous break and enter charges.
