Pay and benefits

Being an RCMP police officer grants you access to a world of opportunity, adventure and growth. There are many benefits, both in terms of salary and private life. All police officer's pay and benefits can be found in the "RCMP Regular Members (below the rank of Inspector) and Reservists Collective Agreement" on the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat website.

Cadet recruitment allowance

You will receive an allowance during your 26-week training. The current cadet recruitment allowance is $525/week. The RCMP also covers your room and board, uniform, training courses, insurance and travel to and from Depot.

If a cadet resigns or is terminated during training, or the two years following training, the RCMP may require repayment of any allowance received.

Salary

When you successfully complete the Cadet Training Program and have been offered employment, you will be hired as a Constable at an annual salary of $71,191. Usually, within 36 months of service, your annual salary will have increased to $115,330.

As of April 1, 2024, the 5 steps in the annual rates of pay for constables are:

  • Step 1: $71,191
  • Step 2: $92,497
  • Step 3: $100,356
  • Step 4: $108,220
  • Step 5: $115,350

Extra-duty pay

You may be asked to do extra-duty. And if so, there are several types of pay: overtime, shift premiums, callback, court duty, travel time and transportation.

Isolated post allowance

There are five types of allowances that can be assigned to an isolated post: environment, living cost differential, fuel and utilities differential, shelter cost differential and special cost allowance. Allowance amounts are determined if you have dependents or not.

Vacation travel assistance

If you are assigned to an isolated post, you may be entitled to vacation travel assistance. The rates vary from province to province to territory as travel expenses vary. The latest rates can be found on the National Joint Council's webpage on Vacation Travel Assistance - Effective April 1, 2024.

Other paid allowances

Bilingual allowance: Speak French and English? You may be entitled to $800 bonus per year.

Operational clothing allowance: Depending on the type of position, you may qualify from $300 up to $1,500 per calendar year to buy special operational clothing.

Educational/Tuition Reimbursement: The RCMP may fund your learning from accredited educational institutions. It is available to all categories of employees from police officers (regular members), civilian members and public service employees. The maximum reimbursement is $1,500 per year per employee. The training must be relevant to the operational needs of your role or for personal development succession-planning purposes. The training must be completed outside working hours on a part-time basis.

Leave with pay

There are many types of leave with pay. Below, are two examples you are entitled to.

Wellness Leave: Police officers also get 8 hours of wellness leave per fiscal year.

Family related leave: Police officers at all ranks get 40 hours per year for family related reasons.

Government housing

The Government of Canada has employee housing in most parts of the country. They can be found in locations where the RCMP delivers government programs (like policing) and where no suitable living accommodations are available nearby.

Vacation days

  • 0 to 5 years of service = 15 days per year
  • 5 to 10 years of service = 20 days per year
  • 10 to 22 years of service = 25 days per year
  • 23+ years of service = 30 days per year

Pension plan

  • 20 years service: retirement with penalty
  • 25 years service: full pension
  • 35 years service: maximum pension

If you already have a Canadian registered pension plan, you may be able to transfer it to the RCMP Pension Plan.

Income tax exemption

First Nation members are exempt from income tax under paragraph 81(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act, and section 87 of the Indian Act if income is earned on a reserve.

Note

The term "Indian" is used for tax exemption purposes as it has a legal meaning within the Act.

Family benefits

Family is important to the RCMP and we want to make sure you and yours have access to generous benefits, including medical, dental and family health plans, and group life insurance.

Women police officers receive 93% of their weekly rate of pay for a maximum of 17 weeks with their maternity allowance. Parental allowance grants all police officers 93% of their weekly rate of pay for a maximum of 37 weeks. Both allowances require that certain conditions are met and leave without pay options are also available to our police officers.

Medical benefits

You can get medical and dental benefits for you and your dependents.

  • Basic health care: Every regular member should have applied for — and received — their provincial/ territorial health card which entitles them to the same basic health care coverage that is afforded to all Canadians.
  • Supplemental health care benefits: Supplemental Health Care (SHC) benefits are provided at no cost to eligible regular members on an "as-needed basis", but with specific limitations.
  • Occupational Health Care: Work-related injuries and illnesses can happen in any workplace. Occupational Health Care is an additional benefit coverage, applied on a case-by-case basis, that the RCMP may provide to members.
