Implement national and divisional reconciliation strategies

The RCMP in each province and territory have collaboratively developed reconciliation strategies with stakeholders, communities, employees and advocates to improve relationships between the RCMP and Indigenous peoples. The development of a national strategy will reflect and align with divisional strategies, engagement and collaboration, and federal government priorities.

Why it matters
The safety and well-being of Indigenous communities is one of the RCMP's five operational priorities. The RCMP must be connected and engaged with communities to understand and meet their needs through culturally responsive policing services.
These reconciliation strategies, developed in close collaboration with local First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities, begin to put words into action and provide accountability across the country to ensure progress in rebuilding trust with Indigenous peoples.

Update
The RCMP continues to engage with Indigenous communities and implement reconciliation strategies in all of its divisions across Canada. At RCMP National Headquarters, the major business lines are completing their own reconciliation strategies to strengthen their internal commitments related to human resources, procurement and professional responsibility, among others.
The RCMP's National Reconciliation Pathway, its strategic plan for reconciliation, continues to be co-developed with Indigenous leadership and advisors to the RCMP. It is planned to be completed by the end of 2023.
May 2022
Update
All RCMP divisions completed local reconciliation strategies in 2021, which are now being implemented and updated.
The strategies are being reviewed in collaboration with local First Nations, Inuit and Métis stakeholders. Together, they will address accountability and progress by reviewing stated objectives and ensuring alignment with the priorities of the Indigenous communities.
The RCMP's National Reconciliation Strategy, which is being co-developed by the RCMP and an Indigenous consulting firm, is expected to be completed in late 2023.
January 2022
Update
The RCMP is actively working to build strong, lasting and respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples and to serve Indigenous communities better. Divisional reconciliation strategies are the result of engagement, consultation and collaboration with local First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities.
All RCMP divisions across Canada have finalized their reconciliation strategies and they are publicly posted. Divisional reconciliation strategies are being implemented and updated as activities conclude and new initiatives are started.
A national page for reconciliation with hyperlinks to available strategies has been launched. Internal reconciliation strategies are also being completed.
The national strategy continues to be under development and will reflect and align with divisional strategies. The target for the national strategy is to be completed by March 31, 2022.
