Riders and horses
The Musical Ride is made up of a troop of up to 32 riders and horses, plus the Officer in Charge. Our riders are all police officers from across Canada. Each needs to serve at least two years before applying to join the Ride. Following equitation training, postings with the Ride last three tour years.
Each winter, we pair up the riders and horses and they stay together for the year. This helps them develop a close bond while touring and performing from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
Riders also act as ambassadors for Canada, the RCMP, and our community policing efforts by:
- answering questions before and after performances
- posing for photos and participating in media interviews
- promoting a career in policing
- making community visits to long-term care homes, schools and local RCMP detachments
This helps us strengthen our connection to the communities we serve and fill Canadians with pride.

Gordon Nesbitt
Gordon Nesbitt has been a civilian member of the RCMP since 2012. Now living in Braeside, Ontario, he is the Musical Ride’s farrier. The farrier travels with the Ride to look after horseshoeing requirements while the horses are away from home.
