Context

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act and will table a Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy in 2023. Until then, the RCMP adheres to the principles of the 2019 to 2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) by complying with the Policy on Green Procurement.

The Policy on Green Procurement supports the Government of Canada’s effort to promote environmental stewardship. In keeping with the objectives of the policy, the RCMP supports sustainable development by integrating environmental performance considerations into the procurement decision making process through the actions described in the 2019 to 2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy “Greening Government” goal.

Report on integrating sustainable development

During the 2022–23 reporting cycle, the RCMP had no proposals that required a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and no public statements were produced.

The RCMP will continue to ensure that its decision-making process includes consideration of Federal Sustainable Development Strategy goals and targets through its strategic environmental assessment process. A strategic environmental assessment for policy, plan, or program proposals includes an analysis of the impacts of the given proposal on the environment, including on relevant Federal Sustainable Development Strategy goals and targets.

Achieving the goals listed above demonstrates the RCMP’s commitment towards the environmentally responsible acquisition, use, and disposal of goods and services.

Green procurement and sustainable development policies and practices continue to exist within the department. Activities during the 2022-23 reporting cycle included engaging stakeholders by communicating RCMP goals and monitoring progress while looking for opportunities to further integrate sustainable development and environment considerations into procurement planning and decision-making. Future changes to policies and practices will be reviewed and incorporated into internal policies and practices, subject to operational requirements.
