Training Tuesdays: Fit for duty

Cadets learn skills to build a diverse foundation important for their careers in policing.

Police work can be both physically and mentally tough. Today, we are highlighting some parts of the Cadet Training Program (CTP) that help cadets be fit for duty.

During a regular shift, police officers can find themselves in any number of different scenarios that require good physical stamina and control, as well as sharp mental focus. Here at Depot, cadets learn skills to build a diverse foundation important for their careers in policing

RCMP cadets run a lot during their time here. They also learn a variety of fitness skills including bodyweight exercises and how to use conventional gym equipment, as well as portable strength and conditioning gear. Well-rounded fitness skills help officers incorporate physical activity into day-to-day shift work, time on the road and limited access to a gym

Newer to the CTP, is Emotional Resilience Skills Training (ERST). ERST aims to provide skills that strengthen and support mental health and is woven throughout the CTP over the full 26 weeks of training. These skills help to reduce and/or minimize Post Traumatic Stress Injuries (PTSI) as well as other operational stress injuries (OSI)
