Training Tuesdays: Incident Management Intervention Model
First posted on January 13, 2026
This Training Tuesday we’re talking about incident management. RCMP Cadets learn how to assess and manage risks in all encounters using the Incident Management Intervention Model (IMIM). This model helps police officers determine the appropriate type of intervention such as verbal de-escalation, and tactical intervention to ensure public and police safety, for any given situation.
The IMIM is a visual aid that is centred around a police officer’s continuous assessment. The nature of police work is dynamic and can change rapidly. This model helps cadets and police officer assess: Situational factors, subject behaviours, officer’s perceptions and tactical considerations. Police Officers need to keep assessing as an event unfolds, aiming to use only as much intervention as needed to keep everyone safe.
This model is introduced in the second week of training and is integrated throughout the Cadet Training Program. A key way cadets apply IMIM is through scenario-based training - which many cadets take part in at different locations at the RCMP Academy each day.
Beyond learning it in basic training at the RCMP Academy, RCMP police officers must recertify on IMIM each year.
