It is important that new cadets arrive at the RCMP Academy with a strong foundation in physical fitness. RCMP cadets should be comfortable running oudoors, lifting, carrying, and performing daily moderate to intense physical exercise. Good fitness habits help in many areas of training like Police Defensive Tactics, stress management, and managing the long training days.

RCMP cadets build on this foundation during their training in a variety of ways in the Cadet Training Program. One way is through "troop runs" that include interval training, obstacle courses and team challenges. These runs are often in uniform and replicate common and physically demanding tasks that may occur in policing. Running in uniform, with the added weight of tactical gear, a duty belt and boots is a much different experience. These runs are not on treadmills. Cadets run both indoors and outdoors, on different terrains and in all different weather conditions - sun, rain, wind and snow.

Troop runs also build teamwork and comradery. As many cadets would tell you, troop runs can also be a lot of fun!
