Safeguarding critical infrastructure
On this page
Critical infrastructure refers to processes, systems, facilities, technologies, networks, assets and services that are essential to the health, safety, security or economic well-being of Canadians and the effective functioning of government. Critical infrastructure can be stand-alone or interconnected and interdependent within and across provinces, territories and national borders. Disruptions of critical infrastructure can result in catastrophic loss of life, negative economic effects, and significant harm to public confidence.
Public Safety Canada identifies 10 critical infrastructure sectors:
- energy and utilities
- finance
- food
- transportation
- government
- information and communication technology
- health
- water
- safety
- manufacturing
Our role
The Federal Policing National Critical Infrastructure Team is responsible for capturing intelligence and assessing physical and cyber criminal threats to critical infrastructure in support of the RCMP's and the Government of Canada's critical infrastructure protection mandates.
This team conducts research and analysis of criminal threats related to critical infrastructure, supports criminal investigations through subject matter expertise, and gathers and assesses information and intelligence with a potential connection to national security. The National Critical Infrastructure Team collaborates with law enforcement, government, and public and private sector stakeholders to ensure a common understanding of the criminal threats and risks surrounding Canada's critical infrastructure.
