Access to the Firearms Reference Table for law enforcement

The online Firearms Reference Table is used by law enforcement to assist with domestic and international policing, firearms tracking and counter-terrorism initiatives.

Access to the online Firearms Reference Table is only for users authorized by the RCMP. Authorized users include members of the policing community, specific Public Agents and approved firearm verifiers.

Licensing agreement for law enforcement

The Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police maintains sole ownership of the software package known as the Firearms Reference Table.

The Commissioner's representative maintains, solely, the right to distribute the data and the associated images of this automated application, as well as all-inclusive materials, in the format in which it is presented. You are expressly prohibited from copying, duplicating, reproducing, or otherwise transferring the software and materials for any purpose whatsoever.

This software and the materials contained within may not be modified, networked, loaned, sold or distributed in total or in part, nor may any derivative works be prepared based upon them. You may not electronically copy or transfer the software or the materials from one computer to another, over a network or otherwise.

Access to the Firearms Reference Table for the public

Members of the public can download the Firearms Reference Table and a list of firearms prohibited by the May 1, 2020 Order in Council (Regulations Amending the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited, Restricted or Non-Restricted SOR/2020-96).

The Firearms Reference Table is not a legal instrument. The Firearms Reference Table is an administrative document created by the RCMP's firearms experts who have, based on the definitions set out in the Criminal Code and the types of firearms prescribed in the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted (SOR/98-462) and the Firearms Act, conducted technical assessments of firearms to assist law enforcement officers, customs officers, and officials responsible for the regulation of firearms with the identification and classification of firearms. The aforementioned Act and Regulations are the prevailing legal authority with respect to firearm classification.
