Integrated Safety and Security Group safety and security measures
On this page
The RCMP, in partnership with the agencies forming the Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG), is dedicated to ensuring a secure environment during the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. Our approach prioritizes the safety of all participants, residents, and visitors while making every effort to minimize disruptions to daily life in the local community. The following measures have been carefully designed to achieve these goals.
Secure zones and access control
To maintain a safe perimeter around summit venues and key locations, certain areas will be designated as restricted zones. These zones are designed to prevent unauthorized access and will be managed with controlled access points monitored by trained security personnel. Only individuals with the appropriate credentials will be permitted access, ensuring a secure environment for summit activities. Signage and barriers will be placed to clearly mark these zones, helping residents and visitors navigate the area safely.

Traffic and parking management
Traffic and parking management is a priority to facilitate movement around Kananaskis while maintaining public safety. Temporary road closures, detours, parking restrictions, and alternative routes will be established to reduce traffic near restricted areas. Traffic control personnel will be on-site to guide drivers and ensure smooth flow, while minimizing disruption to local businesses and residents. We recommend that locals and visitors review the planned closures in advance and follow posted signs to avoid restricted areas.
Public safety patrols
The ISSG will increase patrols and police presence around the Kananaskis area to enhance security. Officers will be available to assist residents, answer questions, and address any concerns that may arise. These patrols are a proactive measure to deter potential incidents and maintain a safe environment, with officers ready to respond swiftly to any situation. Our commitment is to ensure visibility and accessibility, so the community feels supported and reassured throughout the Summit.
Designated demonstration zones
To support peaceful public expression during the 2025 G7 Summit, designated demonstration zones (DDZs) have been identified in Banff and Calgary. Officers will be on hand to support the rights of demonstrators while maintaining public safety for all.
Confirmed locations

These areas were chosen to provide safe, accessible spaces for demonstrators while limiting impacts on nearby residents, businesses, and visitors.
Protecting critical infrastructure
The RCMP and the ISSG also adhere to Alberta's Critical Infrastructure Defence Act (Bill 1), which aims to protect essential infrastructure from disruptions during the G7 Summit. This legislation plays a key role in ensuring critical infrastructure remains secure and operational. For more information, visit the Government of Alberta's website.
Emergency response preparedness
The safety of everyone involved in the G7 Summit is paramount. As such, in collaboration with our ISSG partners, we have coordinated detailed response plans to address potential emergencies, from medical to public safety concerns. Emergency response teams, including paramedics and fire services, will be stationed nearby and equipped to handle various situations. Drills and readiness exercises will be conducted with all participating agencies to ensure a coordinated and efficient response if needed.
Collaborative monitoring and intelligence
The RCMP and its ISSG partners are working closely with national and international agencies to monitor potential threats. Intelligence gathering, surveillance, and real-time information sharing are ongoing to stay ahead of any risks that may arise. This collaborative approach enhances our ability to prevent and address security challenges, providing a robust framework for the protection of everyone involved in the Summit.
These measures are designed with careful attention to the safety and well-being of all. We recognize the important role of community cooperation and thank residents and visitors for their support as we work together to host a safe and successful 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit.
