Mandate
Located within the Musical Ride and Heritage Branch, the Force Historian is responsible for researching and creating information about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and its predecessor organizations, and for making this information available to the public. The goal is to ensure that all historical information is truthful, accurate, substantiated and in compliance with the appropriate access to information laws and corporate priorities.

Force Historian functions and services
Internally
- Provides interpretation, clarification and assessment of historical reports, articles and other information for RCMP managers, divisional senior officials and business lines
- Provides historical knowledge of the RCMP and expertise that supports the organization's activities
- Raises awareness and appreciation of national and local RCMP history among RCMP employees and the general public
- Serves as a source of advice and support to RCMP personnel on inquiries relating to a range of historical events or issues
- Maintains an historical reference centre and preserves knowledge of the RCMP's customs, traditions and heritage
- Conducts and provides historical research on a range of ongoing RCMP activities, events and promotional/communication products for major programs and initiatives
Government services
- Helps present an objective image of the RCMP and its place in Canadian history in print, internet and social media communications products
- Contributes research, advice and text for RCMP publications such as the organization's webpages and magazines, The Quarterly and Gazette
- Liaises with government departments and agencies on historical matters related to the RCMP
Services to the public
- Provides historical research advice and information to communities interested in the history of the RCMP in their local area
- Provides information about former members to families and descendants conducting genealogical research
- Prepares presentations for various audiences on a variety of historical subjects
