On April 4, at approximately 5 :05 a.m., Dauphin RCMP responded to a report of a stolen taxi cab.
Officers learned the suspect had gotten into the cab and was driven to a city hotel, then refused to pay his fare. The cab driver then got out of the cab and asked the suspect to exit the vehicle. Instead, the suspect jumped into the cab’s front seat and drove away.
The vehicle was located by patrolling officers at 5:30 a.m., with the driver of the stolen taxi refusing to pull over and speeding away. At 5:40 a.m., officers saw the taxi stopped in the Dauphin RCMP detachment’s parking lot. As officers approached, the cab sped away again, only to return a short time later. The taxi was then boxed in by officers and the suspect was safely taken into custody.
During the incident, the cab collided with the detachment’s wheelchair ramp, causing significant damage to both the ramp and vehicle.
Dalton Roussin, 32, of Skownan First Nation, has been charged with:
- Theft of vehicle;
- Flight from peace officer; and
- Mischief over $5,000 x2.
He remains in custody.
