On Oct. 29, 2024, RCMP in The Pas received a report that a six-year-old girl had been brought to hospital by a caregiver with serious injuries and bruises. It was initially reported that the child had fallen from her bed.
The girl was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg, where she died on Nov. 3, 2024, from a traumatic head injury.
A subsequent investigation by Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services revealed that the injuries sustained by the child were due to an assault that occurred the day before the child was brought to the hospital.
Earlier this month, charges were authorized against two of the caregivers who were responsible for the health and wellbeing of the child. On April 14, RCMP located and arrested the couple in The Pas.
Ashley Morach, 39, of The Pas is charged with:
- Manslaughter;
- Failure to provide necessities of life; and
- Obstructing justice x2.
Joel Morach, 35, also of The Pas, is charged with failure to provide the necessities of life.
