On March 11, 2026, the Manitoba RCMP East District General Investigative Section began an investigation of public mischief.

Investigation determined that between August 2025 and March 2026, Selkirk RCMP responded to eight incidents involving an unknown female reporting comments of self-harm through Kids Help Phone. In each instance, multiple resources were engaged in efforts to identify and locate the individual, including crisis intervention services, police, and EMS. Despite these efforts, the female was never located.

During five of the reported incidents, the individual falsely identified herself as other people, prompting further investigative measures and the involvement of additional agencies. As a result of these repeated incidents, approximately 239 investigative hours were expended by RCMP. Twenty-five police officers were involved in various investigative and support capacities

Through continued investigation, a 34-year-old female from Selkirk was identified as the person believed to be responsible for the reports. On April 17, 2026, she was arrested without incident and faces charges of:

  • Identity fraud;
  • Criminal harassment; and
  • Public mischief.

She has been released with conditions and will appear in court on June 19 in Selkirk. The investigation continues.

RCMP remind people that making false reports can tie up police and other valuable resources in the community. Making false claims to Police could potentially lead to serious legal consequences for an individual.
