Impaired driver puts vehicle into ditch, tries getaway despite losing multiple tires

On April 27, at approximately 9 p.m., Dauphin RCMP received a report that a vehicle travelling in the RM of Grandview had swerved into a ditch and was blocking traffic.

The incident occurred on Highway 5, near Road 144 West. While en route to the scene, officers learned that the vehicle had taken off and was travelling above the speed limit towards Grandview despite losing two tires in the initial incident. 

RCMP located the vehicle in another ditch along Road 145 West. The driver of the vehicle and a female passenger were found inside the vehicle.

After requests for the suspect to exit the vehicle were rebuffed, officers opened the door, pulled him out of the vehicle and took him into custody. Multiple empty cans of alcohol were found by officers in the back seat and passenger seat of the vehicle.

The male suspect was taken to the RCMP detachment, where the suspect was recorded to have a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit.

A 39-year-old male, from Tootinaowazibeeng Treaty Reserve, has been charged with:

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
  • Operating a vehicle over 0.08;
  • Failure to stop after an accident; and
  • Failing to comply with an undertaking x3.

The suspect was remanded into custody. He was also ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for unlawful transportation of liquor, driving carelessly and operating a vehicle after having consumed drugs or alcohol as a novice driver. The combined total of the fines issued are $1,022.

The passenger, a 37-year-old female, was ticketed for unlawful transportation of liquor, which carries a fine of $237.
