On May 12, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a report that an individual was in possession of unmarked cigarettes.
An officer went to a residence on 8th Street Northwest in Portage la Prairie and was invited inside, where 19 packs of contraband cigarettes were found.
The contraband cigarettes were seized and a 62-year-old Portage la Prairie male was ticketed for possession of unmarked tobacco under the Tobacco Tax Act. The ticket carries a $2,542 fine.
RCMP remind the public that tobacco not purchased, possessed, acquired, marked, stamped, transported, stored or sold in accordance with federal and provincial legislation is illegal. This illegal activity can create a significant revenue stream for organized crime.
