On May 13, 2026, at 11:44 p.m., Shamattawa RCMP received a report of a serious assault that had occurred in the community.

Police attended immediately and found an unresponsive 32-year-old female inside a residence. The victim was transported to the local nursing station with life-threatening injuries, then flown to hospital in Winnipeg for further care. On May 14, she died as a result of her injuries.

The investigation has determined that the victim had fled her residence earlier in the day and sought safe shelter at another location. The suspect, in an act of intimate partner violence, later located her at that residence and seriously assaulted her.

Keith Miles, 27, was arrested shortly after the incident and initially charged with aggravated assault.

That charge has since been upgraded to manslaughter.

He remains in custody.

Shamattawa RCMP, along with Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, continue to investigate.
